Hi, Everybody. My name is Brooke Lundberg, and I've lived in Ramona, California for my whole life. For those of you who don't know where Ramona is, it is about thirty minutes from San Marcos and is on the way to the popular mountain town of Julian (famous for their apple pie). It is a rather small town with many beautiful hiking trails, and I really enjoy going back to volunteer at my elementary school, and running into old teachers of mine while at the grocery store or hiking. I attended Mt.Woodson Elementary school in Ramona, Olive Peirce Middle School in Ramona, and Ramona High School in Ramona (graduated in June of 2007). I then attended college in La Jolla, at UC San Diego (graduated in December of 2010), where I obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology with a minor in History. I hope to continue my educational journey in San Diego County, at Cal State San Marcos.
When it comes to technology, I have a lot to learn. I like computers some days more than others- a lot depends on how well I am doing on the task at hand. I do enjoy working with computers once I understand what I am doing, but I often feel like I am a little slow to catch on and find myself amazed by what some people are capable of doing. As much as I get frustrated at times when my computer (PC) or printer "freaks out", I think technology and computers are amazing tools in education and know that they have countless benefits. I am mostly comfortable with Microsoft Office, and have the most experience creating word documents. I am somewhat experienced in PowerPoint and Excel, but my computer experience does not extend much further than that. I used PowerPoint mostly in high school, and did the basics of excel while working in a research lab at UCSD. I wish I had been required to give presentations at UCSD (I never gave a formal one that required a PowerPoint) so that I felt more comfortable with PowerPoint. However, with direction and guidance I feel like I am somewhere in the middle of the technology spectrum.
The Cal State San Marcos College of Education mission statement sends a very powerful message that I agree with wholeheartedly. I, too, think that reflective teaching, lifelong learning, and ongoing research are key components of a teacher who is sensitive to diversity, educational equity, and social justice. I am excited to (hopefully) attend a school that focuses on these aspects of teaching. With a growing diversity in schools, it takes a lot to be an effective teacher for all populations, and I know CSUSM will get me started on the right track to being an effective teacher.
Hey Brook, The level 1 program is what you take to get you a special ed. credential. The level 2 program is what you need to clear your credential after 2 years experience in teaching. Honestly the program at CSUSM is amazing, all the teachers are super supportive and very informative. I can not think of many cons, outside of some assignments from class. I learned a ton from both programs. There's just a lot of hoops you have to jump through, i've done my few and i've had classmates who jumped through more, you just gotta roll with it, put your head down and make the best of it.
ReplyDeleteHi Brooke! I was wondering what grade/subject you want to teach, but after reading Thao's comment it looks like Special Ed might be your area of interest. Having a degree in Psychology will be a great asset if that is your path. Even though technology isn't your best friend, you are clearly a very articulate, bright and caring person, so don't sweat the computer stuff too much! I think this class will give us some great tools to incorporate technology in our classrooms without being techno-brilliant : ) I wish you the best in your credential program!
ReplyDeleteHi Brooke! I grew up just west of you in Poway, (can't beat those rodeos). I too feel like I did way more PowerPoint presentations in high school than in college; I think the program is pretty user friendly, even if you haven't used it in a while. If you are looking to go into Special Education let me know, I observed a lot of mild-moderate classes in Oakland and would not mind chatting it up with you.
ReplyDeleteHey Brooke! You're just like me! (in that I too grew up in the same place my whole life)... You're obviously a bright young lady if you kicked UCSD to the curb a semester early, congrats! Hopefully things work out and you can attain your education specialist credential here at CSUSM :]
ReplyDeleteHi Brooke! I really like that your degree was in psychology because as a future teacher, that is so important to pay attention to! Good luck on your future career!

ReplyDeleteI agree that technology when used correctly has countless benefits within education. Hopefully we can learn more about these benefits in this class!
ReplyDeleteBrooke, I'll help you out with all this technology stuff. But you have to make sure I don't kick any computers when it isn't working.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments, guys!
